Civil Rights Timeline

1865:The Civil War ended.The North won.The North forced the South to accept three new laws. Abolished legal slavery.1865 through the 13Th amendment to the Constitution.


1868:It guaranteed African Americans equal rights and equal protection under the law with the 14Th amendment.


1870:The 15Th amendment (1870) gave black men the right to vote.


1860's -1880's:Passing the poll tax to prevent blacks from voting.Getting around the 15Th amendment.The supreme court made it easier for blacks to vote.


1892:Plessy vs. Ferguson-Ferguson tried to make Plessy understand why everybody is separated.Ferguson told Plessy that separate helps to not have violence.After this court case the Jim Crows laws came.


1954:Brown vs. Board- This court case was remembered because it helped all the public schools in America get integrated.Separate isn't equal it's unfair.


1955:Supreme Court rules sweat vs.Painter and McLuhan Oklahoma that segregation of law school program is unconstitutional.


1957:The city of Little Rock decided to integrate it's biggest high school (Little Rock High.)
There were 9 African Americans that were selected to attend Centural High School.There was a mean mop of whites.Elizabeth Eckford didn't get in the school with the other students.She had the white mop behind her.


1962:James Meredith a black student enrolls at university at Mississippi sparking a huge conflict in the South.
